8/30/2023 0 Comments Orion st80![]() The first night I got the scope (it came in time for my birthday which was nice) the skies were unusually clear, so I gave it a test run. I was also elated to see that the main objective was fully multi-coated and not just fully coated as Orion stated on their website. When I first opened the box, I was struck by how nice the scope looked. Although its not one of the more expensive scopes around, it just felt so solidly constructed. This was one of the draw cards for this OTA for me anyway. It had respectable optics (can’t say it’s the best since its not an APO or semi-APO scope and never claimed to be one) and every part was made of metal save the focuser knobs. This one garnered excellent reviews in its category of cheap but good scopes. ![]() There are several 80ST incarnations current being sold but they are all dodgy (clones of the original Synta made ST), save the original Synta optical tube assembly (OTA). After looking around for a while, I found a suitable Synta made Orion (USA) 80mm short tube (ST). I also wanted to stay within my budget and hence my search on Astromart. I wanted sharp contrasty views only a refractor could give. I just wanted something that will allow me the luxury of more magnification every now and then. Take nothing away from the binocs as they will always be my ultimate grab and go and airline travel scope. I also yearned for a more diverse range of magnifications. finder : 6x26mm Orion correct-image metal finder on dovetail bracketĪfter using the 15x70’s for about a year, I began to miss my lightweight 3” newt and its easy setup for those casual nights of stargazing when I just did not feel like lugging around my 17-18kg EQ newt.other included accessories : mounting plate and StellarVue enhanced 1.25” diagonal.type : air spaced achromatic doublet refractor (multi-coated).The ShortTube 80-A also includes two felt-lined, hinged tube rings and a Vixen-style dovetail mounting plate, giving you the option to attach the telescope to the compatible mount of your choice. The large 8 x 40 finder scope will ensure that you can locate and center your target with ease. Both the eyepiece and diagonal barrels are threaded for optional Orion eyepiece filters. This telescope comes with two 1.25" Sirius Plossl eyepieces - 25 mm and 10 mm - which produce 16x and 40x power (respectively), as well as a 90-degree mirror diagonal (1.25"). This dew shield extends more than 3" out from the lens, preventing dew formation and blocking off-axis glare. It is housed in an all-aluminum 15" long tube that is equipped with a 1.25" rack-and-pinion focuser on one end and an aluminum dew shield on the other end. The ST80-A's doublet objective lens is multi-coated to give you excellent light transmission. These may include star clusters, nebulae, and even galaxies! You can also take detailed looks at the cratered surface of the Moon, Saturn's rings, and other solar system targets. The 80 mm objective lens, short 400 mm (f/5) focal length, and wide field of view make this scope ideal for viewing large deep-sky objects. The Short-Tube 80-A is a very compact, wide-field astro telescope that you can take with you to your favorite dark sky location with ease. The Orion ShortTube 80-A achromatic refractor telescope is back in the Orion lineup by popular demand! It is the astronomical observation version of the ShortTube 80 achromatic refractor (the "-A" is for Astronomy).
